Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable neurotoxin with a myriad of applications in aesthetics and other medical disciplines. The active ingredient in Botox is called botulinum toxin and works by paralyzing your muscles temporarily. More specifically, it blocks the nerve signals that tell your muscles to flex.

Since your wrinkles form because of overworked muscles, they subside when the muscles below them can no longer contract.

Botox works as a solution for wrinkles for three months or more at a time. If you’re happy with your results and want to maintain them, you can book maintenance appointments at Island Dermatology to keep enjoying your younger appearance.

Jeuveau® is another neuromodulator offered at Island Dermatology. Similar to Botox, Jeuveau prevents and minimizes wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles beneath them.

The treatments are nearly identical, except that they use different formulas. This means that Botox works better to treat frown lines in some patients and Jeuveau produces better results in others. Talk to your Island Dermatology provider to find out which treatment is better for you.

What does Botox treat?

You may be familiar with Botox as an injectable that smooths wrinkles and lines to give patients a younger appearance because of its popularity in the realm of cosmetic medicine. In reality, it’s much more than that.

You can also get Botox injections to help relieve excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in your underarms, face, and palms.

When it comes to your appearance, the practitioners at Island Dermatology often offer Botox injections to help reduce wrinkles, such as:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines or furrows
  • Eyebrow wrinkles

If you have these wrinkles but aren’t a candidate for Botox specifically or want a liquid facelift effect, Island Dermatology also offers injectable fillers to minimize your wrinkles and, additionally, restore volume to your face. Their menu includes hydrating hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane®, Voluma®, and Perlane®.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Botox is well-studied and safe for use when a trained practitioner, like those at Island Dermatology, administers your injections.

After a thorough consultation that touches on your medical history, current medications, and goals for treatment, your practitioner may determine that you’re a candidate if you:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Have mild or moderate wrinkles
  • Are bothered by your wrinkles
  • Aren’t allergic to ingredients in the drug
  • Aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not have conditions that affect your nervous system
  • Are otherwise healthy in general

The only way to be sure that you’re eligible (or ineligible) for any treatment is to attend a consultation and be transparent about your health and concerns. If Botox isn’t the right treatment for you, your practitioner can guide you to other skin rejuvenating solutions.
